SEPTEMBER 24 - 26 is the long awaited and much anticipated GUIANA 1838 Red
Carpet Premiere Weekend at UA Crossbay Cinemas located on Liberty Avenue in
Ozone Park, Queens, NewYork.
There would be thirteen exclusive showings and according to the producer,
tickets are already on sale. Synopsis
The abolition of slavery in the British Caribbean in 1834 brings back
plantation overseer James Bullock to the 'Blacks,' this time plotting new ways
to get them back to the sugarcane fields.
Amie, a former slave and father of an African Maroon is now a blacksmith. He
is unsure of their freedom and warns his people that the days of the slave
master are far from over.
The Gillanders, Arbuthnot & Company in Calcutta were part of the East
India Company and were in the business of recruiting 'Coolies
from parts of India to fill the labour void caused by abolition. They
hired Sinha, the fierce small timer, who sells dreams of El Dorado to
unsuspecting 'Coolies' impoverished by hard times in India.
Laxman was among those who made the initial voyage aboard the British slave
ship that arrived on the shores of British Guiana on 5th May, 1838 after 112
days on the high seas. They had signed to five-year contracts as indentured
servants.
Upon arrival, the British planters promptly enslaved the 'Coolies' on the
colony.
John Scoble of the British and Foreign Anti Slavery Society arrived on the
colony a year later to discover a new form of slavery, this time on the backs
of Indians.
