- Flee with undisclosed amount of cash

Three gunmen made off with a substantial amount of cash after terrorizing the employees of Jairam General Store on Saffon Street, Charlestown.

Reports are that the gunmen struck around 14:30 hours while pretending to be
customers.
A female employee told this newspaper that she was attending to a customer when
a young man approached the counter asking for two sacks of rice.
The employee said as she was enquiring from the man what brand of rice he wanted
the man pulled out a gun and ordered everyone to put their hands in the
air.
According to the woman, another man who was in the shop also brandished a gun
and the two began ordering everyone to hand over their cellular phones.
“Dey tek away everybody cell phone because they didn’t want anybody call de
police and then one ah them turn and ask wheh de money deh,” the woman
recalled.
She added that she pointed to the cashier booth and the men turned their
attention to that area.
“As soon as they turn around all ah we who went behind the counter duck under
de counter and we aint raise up till we hear like they gone,” the employee
recounted.
Throughout the ordeal, the woman said another man stood just at the door as the
“look out man”.

Employees claimed that one of the guns which the men used during the robbery
appeared to be a toy gun while the other looked like a small machine
gun.
Escape with a large amount of cash
The men made good their escape with a large amount of cash and a large quantity
of land line and cellular phone cards.
Meanwhile, when this newspaper arrived on the scene, employees were still shaken
over the incident as they were seen crying and consoling each other.
One employee said that while she was hiding under the counter she heard a woman
in the store screaming.
“Like they try tekking away de woman chain or something or we ain’t know if
they knock she or something,” the employee said.
The employees claimed also that among themselves the gunmen were discussing
whether or not they should kill the security guard before fleeing.
Eyewitnesses say the men fled into Howes Street, Charlestown, and disappeared.
Police were summoned to the area but no one was arrested. Investigations are
ongoing.
